Case Study In Five Hotel Buildings In Denmark
Challenges
The Hotel Allinge, located in Allinge-Sandvig, Denmark, consists of five separate buildings, each equipped before 2023 with an outdated and costly heating system that uses oil to heat water for the hotel. The long heating season, energy-inefficient radiators, lack of individual room control, and absence of temperature data were major obstacles to achieving efficiency and reducing energy costs. The building required a modern solution that would enable hotel management to monitor and control the temperature on a room-by-room basis, without the need for time-consuming renovations or labor-intensive manual adjustments.
Solution
In January 2023, the hotel installed air-to-water heat pumps, using the oil heater only as a backup during peak hours throughout the year. In mid-December 2023 they installed 114 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats across five buildings, with each room featuring two thermostats—one in the bathroom and one in the main room, and in some cases, two in the main room. Additionally, 10 Vicki thermostats were installed in common areas such as the lobby, public restrooms, lounge, and office, and 1 Wireless Thermostat in the dining room. The devices allowed for remote monitoring and control on a room-by-room basis, offering real-time and historical data that could be easily analyzed for sustainability reporting. The scheduling function, combined with the open-window detection feature, proved particularly beneficial in helping the hotel prevent energy waste when rooms were unoccupied. The MClimate Wireless Thermostat installed in the dining room enabled occupants to control all the radiators, adjust the room temperature directly from it, and provide indoor climate information such as current temperature and humidity levels. Installing Vicki Smart Radiator Thermostats at the end of 2023 led to energy savings for the first heating season of up to 30%. The reduced need for oil heating contributed to an 84.7% decrease in oil consumption in 2024 compared to 2022, and a 56.4% decrease compared to 2023. Additionally, electrical power usage for heating in 2024 was reduced by 10,125 kWh with an average price of kWh for the period H1 2022 to H1 2024 being 3.2028 DKK per kWh, a 26.2% decrease from 2023—marking another significant reduction in energy consumption.
The smart building solutions enabled the hotel to achieve energy efficiency without requiring major construction work.
Results
- Up to 30% reduction of the heatnig costs
